Day 166 of the Women’s Walk Across America.
Today, we walked along a piece of American history—the Historic National Road, the first major federally funded highway in the United States.
Authorized by Congress in 1806, the road began in Cumberland, Maryland, and eventually stretched west to Vandalia, Illinois, carrying settlers, stagecoaches, mail, commerce, and ideas across a growing nation.
By the 1830s, it crossed Indiana along much of what is now U.S. Route 40. It became known as “The Road That Built the Nation.”
Nearly two centuries later, we walked it too.
