Today Susan rode 31 miles, through Beloit, Simpson, and Glasco, Kansas.
Beloit has majestic buildings crafted from locally quarried Cretaceous limestone. Because wood is rare in many parts of Kansas, pioneers used native stone to construct nearly everything. We saw the Mitchell County Courthouse, built 1900-1901. A ballot box stood at the side entry of the courthouse, a visible reminder that voting is foundational to our democracy.
Kansas is facing new restrictions on voting, and an attempt to allow political parties to fund Supreme Court judicial campaigns.
The ACLU and League of Women Voters recently sent a Notice Letter to the Secretary of State. Marlene Merrill, president of the League of Women Voters of Kansas stated, “The Save Kansas Act is yet another example of unnecessary burdens placed on our right to vote. The League of Women Voters of Kansas will fight for a democracy that complies with the law and insures all eligible Kansans are able to seamlessly register to vote and cast their ballot.” (Source: KansasReflector.com)
We met a group of people on the side of the road, who were campaigning against a change to the way Kansas Supreme Court justices are chosen. They are asking people to vote NO on August 4 to keep their courts fair and impartial. It is exciting to see people out in the heat of the summer, on the side of the road, trying to convince others to take action to keep courts fair and impartial.
