Riding down the road in the middle of Kansas, we were not expecting to see a Statue of Liberty. Erected in 1951, its marker reads, “With the faith and courage of their forefathers, who made possible the freedom of these United States, the Boy Scouts of America dedicated this replica of the Statue of Liberty as a pledge of everlasting fidelity and loyalty.”
Little Lady Liberty statues were part of the Boy Scouts of America 1950’s “Crusade to Strengthen the Arm of Liberty”. About 25-30 of these copper replicas were installed across Kansas between 1950 and 1952.
Seventy five years later, liberty is in jeopardy in this country. The “arm of liberty” is being eroded, not strengthened. As the Women’s Walk Across America traverses the United States, it is clear that Americans still hold strong to the value of Liberty for All. We are walking to ensure that our voices are heard.
